About Alan

Alan is the third of four children in his family. His Mother was a school teacher and his Father was in the food services industry.  He spent his formative years growing up in St. Petersburg and Gainesville, Florida.  In 1963 his family moved to Decatur, Georgia where he attended Decatur High School.  Alan played not only varsity football at Decatur High but also varsity basketball and track.  He attended the University of Florida on a full academic scholarship and graduated with a BS in Marketing with a minor in mathematics from the School of Business.  Alan was a member of PKA fraternity and played college football from 1966 through 1970 as a defensive lineman.

While attending Decatur High School, Alan met his wife of 49 years – Marie Montgmery Cole.  They reside in the City of Brookhaven.  Both Alan and Marie have been very active in their Murphey Candler Park community as well as the City of Brookhaven.

Over the years, he has owned and operated three businesses in DeKalb County.

Community Involvement

In 1971 Alan joined the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in downtown Atlanta.  Alan and Marie were married at Redeemer; his in-laws were married there as well. His wife has been a member of Redeemer since 1949. Alan’s involvement with the Church has included, but not limited to, a mission trip to Nicaragua, sponsoring a fundraising dinner to raise money for others to travel on the Nicaraguan mission trip, counting offering, administering communion and participating in weekly services. Both Alan and Marie participate in the food ministry at Redeemer, which over the years has fed more than 2,000,000 meals to homeless and working poor in downtown Atlanta!  During Covid, feeding the homeless, unemployed and working poor has been even more critical than ever!

Alan was honored to serve a 6 year term on the Board of Directors for Lutheran Towers, a non-profit senior housing in downtown Atlanta. He oversaw extensive construction renovations to the facility. During his final year, he was President of the Board of Directors.

In his leisure time, Alan is an avid ALTA tennis player and has captained several championship teams over the past 20 years.

For more than 30 years, Alan volunteered for the Atlanta Road Race to help keep the runners and all involved safe on the 4th of July.  He rose by 3 a.m. to start setting up barricades and structures for the annual race, then breaking everything down when others had left to celebrate.

Alan has worked on several Habitat for Humanity houses.  He participates in the Totes To Tots drive each year, which provides backpacks and luggage for foster children in Georgia.  He and his wife also sponsor and participate in events at Goshen Valley Boys Ranch in Waleska, Georgia throughout the year. Over the years, Alan has supported DeKalb County’s Meals on Wheels and the Shepherd’s Men benefiting military personnel at the Shepherd’s Spinal Clinic here in Atlanta.  Both of these organizations do wonderful work here in Georgia for so many.

The Cole family are huge animal lovers.  Alan and Marie are both actively involved in Golden Retriever Rescue of Atlanta whether it is attending a fundraising event or picking up a dog from a shelter.  Marie serves on the Board of Directors for GRRA.  You will often see Alan walking their dogs in the Murphey Candler area.  They collect donations of needed items for LifeLine Animal Shelter in Chamblee to help all animals.  Alan delivers these items regularly to the Shelter.
